Council Member Alfredo Flores
The residents of Lynwood made history when they elected Councilman Alfredo Flores, 29, as one of the youngest elected officials in the history of Lynwood. Flores embodies ideals and perspectives of a new generation that seeks change for the benefit of Lynwood residents.
As a new member of the Council, Flores will address important issues that affect the residents’ quality of life. One of the issues at hand is the stadium proposal, better known as the proposed Angeles Field redevelopment project. In addition, he knows that there are other pressing issues that need to be addressed for the community to move forward and prosper. One area of interest is the need to ensure that the City has adequate public safety resources to protect residents at home, work, school and other public areas. Another is the City’s need to develop additional revenue sources to provide the level and types of services needed for the community and to ensure a prosperous future.
Flores, a longtime resident of Lynwood, attended Roosevelt and Will Rogers Elementary Schools, Hosler Middle School and graduated from Lynwood High School in 1997. While in high school, he was part of the inaugural class of the Academy for Urban Ecology in Lynwood (AFUEL) program. This is an honors program consisting of college level work involving community issues and their solutions. Flores holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Psychology from Cerritos Community College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from California State University Dominguez Hills. At Dominguez Hills, Flores served as President of the Eta Iota Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity. During his tenure as President the membership doubled and the University recognized this fraternity as top ranked, based on academic achievements, scholarships, GPA scores and involvement in the community. Flores plans to complete a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Psychology.
Flores has been working for the Lynwood Unified School District since 2000. He works with children of diverse backgrounds and with various learning disabilities and needs. Flores feels that his involvement in educating children keeps him grounded and helps him keep things in perspective.
